Retention and Dismissal Policies
Students can be dismissed from the MFT program in the following ways:
1. Deficiency Points: Earning grades below “B” in graduate courses results in . Students will be dismissed from the MFT Program if they accumulate three or more academic deficiency points. A grade of “C” equals one deficiency point (although the “C” can be credited toward the degree). A grade of “D” (which cannot be credited toward the M.S. degree so the course must be repeated) equals two deficiency points. A grade of “F” or “WF” (neither of which will be credited toward the M.S. degree) equals three deficiency points. Warning letters will be issued to students for each earned deficiency point until enough points are accumulated to warrant dismissal.
2. Probationary Admission Status: Applicants admitted to the MFT program on probationary status must maintain an overall 3.0 GPA the first semester (regardless of the number of attempted credit hours). The student is dismissed if he or she fails to achieve a 3.0 by the end of the first semester.
3. Professional Misconduct: Violation of the , academic dishonesty, inappropriate and/or harmful interpersonal behaviors with faculty, students, the public, or in the classroom can result in dismissal from the program for non-academic reasons.
